Happy New Year!  What are your goals for 2023?

As a financial planning professional, I would like to share with you how our family tackles our goals each year.

I have an Excel spreadsheet that my husband and I review and update annually.  It has the following categories:

Finances – Investments, Debt, Net Worth

    Personal Goals

    Family Goals

    Kids

    Health

    House

    Travel

    Wants

    5 Year Plan

    10 Year Plan

Every January, I update the spreadsheet, and my husband, and I plan a date night out for dinner or drinks to review and discuss.  While it doesn’t sound very romantic, it’s a process and evening we both value.

First, we always start with a review of the previous year and celebrate what we accomplished.  For example, we maxed out our 401(k)s!  Our mortgage balance declined by $18k.  Our net worth increased by $100k.  We focus on all the positive things we achieved including travel and family experiences.  We didn’t have a huge travel budget last year, but we still managed to knock out two travel aspirations: visiting the Grand Canyon and white water rafting on the American River with the kids.

Yes, there are many things still on our list going into 2023 like new carpeting for the house, washing the windows, and setting up bank accounts for the kids.  We try not to dwell on the stuff we didn’t complete and focus on the positives.

Next, we focus on our goals for the New Year.  Some goals go into the long-term or wish category such as a family trip to Africa, an electric car, and retiring now!  Some goals seem to remain on our list year after year:  lose 20 pounds and eat dinner at the table more.

Goals must be challenging, focused, measurable, and relevant and they must be written down!  My husband and I serve as accountability partners for each other.  It also helps to keep us on the same page and recognize that while we have united goals, we also have individual goals that maybe we don’t voice to each other very often.  Our process also reinforces that life is precious and short.  It helps us to prioritize what’s important.  While a Telsa would be nice; maybe it would be better to spend those funds on visiting family and the kids’ education.

I invite you to try this process.  Write down your goals for 2023 then revisit next January and celebrate what you’ve accomplished while fine-tuning those intentions as well as new ones for 2024.

I wish you a healthy and prosperous 2023!
